News from the New York City Director

CSM–NYC started the New Year off with a bang! We had a group of 23 college students arrive on New Year’s Day to spend their winter break serving in the city. The group traveled from Waynesburg College in western Pennsylvania, which meant an early New Year’s morning.
Throughout the week the group served at a couple different soup kitchens, served a meal at a children only food program (where they also got to play games with the children), packed food at the food bank that gets distributed to soup kitchens and food pantries all throughout the 5 boroughs and NJ, tutored recent immigrants from China and many Arabic countries, chopped a lot of vegetables at God’s Love We Deliver (a meal delivery service for people living with HIV/AIDS and other illnesses that delivers approximately 1,800 hot meals per day), toured the United Nations as well as the rest of NYC with a focus on praying for the city and after all that, the group served CSM by doing some painting at our housing site to get ready for our busy season ahead! Sound exhausting? It is! Sound amazing? It is!
Here are some things that this group learned while interacting with God’s people:
- To never judge either poor or rich people.
- To not be so judgmental of other nationalities.
- To open my eyes and mind to things that I may not be accustomed to and experience them.
- God is really out there and this trip reaffirmed my faith.
- To be more open-minded of other’s thoughts and beliefs who are unlike mine.
- I learned a lot about myself by doing new things on this trip. I’ve made a commitment not to take all the things I’ve been blessed with for granted.
- To look for more groups to help with around my area.
It is an amazing experience to be part of so much learning and change, and in just one week. We all have much to learn about God’s people in the world around us, and I am blessed to work with groups that have fresh eyes and new perspectives. Come join me in New York City, I promise you won’t go home the same as you come!
