News from the Philadelphia City Director

One of my favorite parts about being a city director is finding new ministry sites and restaurants. Each year we try to add a few more sites in order to reach different areas of the city and keep trips fresh and exciting for returning groups. By adding these new sites we are able to broaden the spectrum of service opportunities.

This year we were thrilled to add several new ministry sites and a very cool restaurant. With the kick off of our spring in late February, we were able to start working and eating at our new locations. It was great to know that they had lots of work for us to do and plenty of delicious food to be eaten.

One of the new ministry sites is The Salvation Army. They have a huge warehouse in an area of the city called Kensington. This warehouse is jam packed with toys left over from Christmas. Our groups have been helping them sort through the toys and get them organized before next Christmas rolls around. They store thousands of toys that will be distributed to many families over the next year’s holiday season.

We also started working at Inglis House, a residential home for adults with physical disabilities. The program is “designed to enable people with physical disabilities to enjoy life with the greatest amount of independence and mobility.” I had the privilege of volunteering with a group at Inglis House and was so inspired by the staff and the people who live there. There is a sense of joy and desire to live life to the fullest that is not seen on an every day basis.

Fatou and Fama is the name of our new restaurant. It is a family run restaurant that serves food from West Africa. Our groups enjoy an incredible buffet with curry chicken, lentil soup, cabbage, rice, okra and lots of other West African specialties. So far, it’s been a big hit!

We are so thankful for new opportunities to serve the city of Philadelphia and for the organizations that have joined in partnering with CSM. Please pray for this Spring and Summer as we build relationships with The Salvation Army, Inglis House, Fatou and Fama and continue to invest in our other ministries and restaurants.
