News from the Houston Director

It’s hard to start a city highlight about Houston without boasting of our wonderful 2008 City Hosts! This year’s group are each unique and gifted and they have come together beautifully into an intimate community. They each talk about the joys of coming “home” at the end of the day to share their experiences and debrief their days on a deep level. They are passionate about Jesus and about loving Him through loving the “least of these.” We have had lots of great discussions around the very real challenges and joys of serving in an urban context. Also impressive is their collective height (4 of the 6 are taller than me), which ranges as high as 6′ 8″! We would appreciate your prayers for them as they lead our serving teams towards engaging Jesus this summer. They are: Adrienne, Amelia, Andy, Emily, Kelli and Matt.
When our groups come to serve for a week, we are able to give them a variety of serving experiences, with the homeless, with children, with education, with seniors, with those living with HIV/AIDS, and more. Some experiences are more relational, while others are behind the scenes, sorting, preparing, and serving. One of the exciting results is that participants are able to explore and discern their own giftedness and calling as they work in a variety of contexts. Sometimes God uses these experiences to direct people towards specific areas. It is beautiful for us to participate in these discoveries. Here are some recent comments from college-age participants:
READ Commission ESL Class—I really felt welcome and felt qualified to be there. They made my day and maybe gave me a hope for a possible future in ESL! Thank you!
Ujima really impacted me and I think I’m going to do Big Brother/Big Sister… because of it. The kids were awesome.
My favorite part of my CSM experience was: realizing a passion for adult education at READ [a ministry site where we work with adult literacy and education].
After CSM, I commit to… Not letting my stereotypes rise up again, and I will remember to pray for the organizations at work in Houston. Also, I will remember the passion that was re-instilled to teach in the inner-city.
Thanks for all that you do to support CSM and enable our participants to serve and encounter Christ in Houston and all of our cities!
