Partners in Ministry
Living in the heart of the community that we serve gives us a new perspective on the people and places we come in contact with. Part of living here involves using the local laundromat to wash our clothes, which is not something that I have been accustomed to in the past.
Just the other day I made the trek to Compton and Gage and prepared for yet another 3 hours of sitting around reading Jack Kerouac. I never got a chance to, however, because I met the most interesting woman using the washers next to mine. Her name was Maria, and she had much to say about the neighborhood we live in. She told me how she feels that gradually the community has become much more of a family than in the past, and that she feels safer than ever before. That is not to say that she did not acknowledge the still present issues facing South LA; she has a son and a daughter that have been caught up in drugs and poor company, but her faith and trust in God helps her through it. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Maria and hearing all she had to say.
Driving back with my laundry fresh and clean, I thought about how I never would have met her, or even ventured down that way, if I hadn't been living at the housing site in South LA or if I had my own personal washer/dryer. God certainly makes a way for you to learn more about his people here in the city, and those ways are usually pretty memorable.
