News from the Nashville Team
As the New Year draws near, we take time to reflect on the many individuals and organizations that we have had the privilege to work with and meet. It is impossible, in writing, to come close to expressing the sense of creativity, collaboration and community that exists in this city. So, here are just a few examples of what has been happening in Nashville this past year:
- 170 local congregations worked through Nashville’s Room in the Inn program to provide shelter and warm meals to hundreds of men each night during the cold winter months. In addition to providing shelter, Room in the Inn has created a state-of-the-art resource center that exists as a space of affirmation and hospitality where all are welcomed and all have the opportunity to both give and receive.
- Staff, volunteers and hundreds of donors worked together to provide toys, food and clothing for over 5000 Nashville families through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project.
- Members of the Edgehill neighborhood and Edgehill United Methodist Church have collaborated to create a community run “Free–Store” where neighbors can support one-another through the giving and receiving of pre-used household goods. All items in the store are freely given and freely received.
- East Nashville Cooperative Ministries is a food pantry and neighborhood resource center that has been a pillar in the East Nashville community for years. Recently, they have expanded to become a hub for community gardening and food education. This year they have begun renovating their building. This renovation includes expanding the kitchen to create space for cooking classes and community meals and remodeling the food pantry.
- Nashville CAREs (Council on Aids Resources, Education and Service) provides community education regarding HIV/AIDS and is a resource center for over 2,400 men, women and children who are living with HIV/AIDS in the Nashville area. This year, Nashville CAREs moved from the outskirts of the city to a new location with more space and a more accessible location.
This list could certainly go on for pages. I am thankful for all those in the city who see Christ where I might pass Him by.
“The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.” – Thomas Merton
