Toronto Summer 2009 Team

Left to right: Kristine, Tim, Catherine, Laura, and Dan

Kristine Brereton
Kristine is originally from Moline, IL. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 2003 with a degree in Forest Science, and also has a two year diploma of ministry from Hillsong International Leadership College for Pastoral Leadership/Counseling. Although she has not had any formal training with youth or missions, she has been volunteering in communities for over 15 years in an array of activities. She enjoys traveling, having been blessed to live in five separate countries (Canada makes #5) in the past six years. It has enabled her to learn about many cultures and have friends from all over the world. “This summer serving in Toronto is very exciting for me; I believe that by working for CSM I will not only be Jesus’ hands and feet to many hurting people, but also help inspire others to do the same.”

Catherine Campbell
Catherine is from New Bern, NC. She just finished her third year at Campbell University where she is a Religion major. Catherine has participated in multiple local and abroad, construction-based and urban, mission trips throughout her high school and college career. She has spent the past two summers working with children of all ages as a camp counselor in the mountains of NC and as an intern to an activity center in East St. Louis, IL. At Campbell, Catherine has served on leadership for Baptist Student Union, as chaplain in the Student Government Association, and in the ministry programs of the Alliance of AIDS of Raleigh. She is currently the Religion Club president. Catherine loves people, everything about the outdoors, downtowns, constant dance parties, hot tea, coffee, reading, traveling, admiring architecture, creating, and laughing! “I hope that in this summer with CSM Toronto, I can be an efficient and heart-felt guide for participants who come to help minister to the people of the city with love and relationship. I also hope that the participants learn lessons and attitudes that make a transition back to their own neighborhoods and every neighborhood they become a part of for the rest of their lives.”

Laura Fryman
Laura grew up in a small town in western Oklahoma. She just graduated from Oklahoma State University with a major in Child and Family Services and a minor in International Studies and plans to attend graduate school at Oklahoma State. She was fortunate to grow up in a church that encouraged mission work, and participated in many different mission trips. Two of her favorite trips were to Alaska and Mexico, where they worked closely with children and their families. She has been very involved in community service projects during college in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Laura's favorite hobbies include playing golf and traveling, and when time allows, reading. “This will be my first experience with CSM and I am excited about living in Toronto and learning more about the mission opportunities in the city. I love meeting new people, and I am looking forward to being a part of the CSM team!”

Dan Hendon
Daniel Hendon graduated from Moody Bible Institute in May of 2008 with a degree in Urban Ministry. He worked with an inner city sports ministry in Indianapolis for two years. During his time in Chicago, he volunteered with Innercity Impact for three and a half years working with inner city youth and volunteer groups. He has a very multi-cultural family with a Palestinian stepdad and five Guatemalan brothers and that’s just the beginning. “This summer I hope to fall more in love with Jesus, serve people in need and if I’m really lucky help some kids realize their call to the ministry while being led around city ministries, much like I did in high school.”

Timothy van Alstyne
Tim was born in Calcutta, India, but he grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. He went to university in Hamilton, ON, Canada where he studied a little bit of everything—philosophy, psychology, history, English and religion. Tim has been on missions trips to Amsterdam, Holland and to northern India. He has worked at various ministries, including ministries with children and youth, ministries with street youth in Ontario, and with adults and children with special needs. Tim likes to explore new places. He is only occasionally distracted by shiny objects and mixed metaphors. Tim was a city host for CSM in Chicago this past spring and is excited to join the Toronto team this summer. “I love getting to know all kinds of different people—hearing their stories and learning about what they love. I believe that God is always sneaking up on us and writing himself into our stories when we least expect it, and I look forward to seeing what he is going to come up with next.”
